Oasis Overland Egypt Travel Update

Monday 31st January 2011

Oasis tour leaders report on their return from Egypt and tours are affected by protests

Oasis Overland’s recently returned tour leaders report that Egyptians are apologetic, helpful and are wishing to assure travellers that they are welcome in Egypt.  As protests continue, the company is offering refunds or transfers to their travellers booked on February departures of their Egypt Regional Explorer tours.  Overland Adventure trips that incorporate several countries are due to depart as scheduled.  This includes trips to Tunisia due to a change in FCO travel advice.

The adventure travel tour operator has received reports from local agents in Egypt and from their recently returned tour leaders.  Director Chris Wrede comments ‘In our experience, tourists have not been targeted by protesters. On the contrary, our group travelled between Hurghada and Dahab last week and there were a number of impromptu road blocks set up by local people near Suez.  Our vehicle was stopped at these and as soon as it was seen that tourists were inside, there were shouts of greetings and also profuse apologies on behalf of Egyptians.  They told our tour leaders and group not to be afraid, that they were welcome in Egypt and were safe from harm.’

Chris also states ‘We are keeping a close eye on events and are flexible enough to make changes to itineraries at short notice and once on the road.  We will be making decisions on a trip by trip basis and will inform travellers currently booked on our trips of the situation at least 4 weeks before departure.  We will do our best to run our trips as planned, but the safety of our travellers and crew is paramount and so late itinerary changes are possible.’

Oasis Overland is hoping to run two Egypt & Jordan departures on the 20th and 24th February, subject to the number of clients still wishing to travel and to advice from local partners in Egypt and the FCO.

Overland Adventure trips that incorporate several countries are due to run as scheduled.  Due to a change in the FCO’s Tunisia travel advice, the 58 day Tunis to Istanbul trip starting 14th Feb and travelling via Libya, Egypt, Jordan and Syria, will be going ahead.  However all trips to Egypt at this time are subject to itinerary changes.
