Win the Arctic adventure of a lifetime to Svalbard, 78N, for two months this spring with BSES, worth almost £6,000!

If you are from the North East* of England or the Channel Islands, and aged 18-23, then we are offering YOU the chance to win a place on our ’Extreme Arctic’ expedition this coming spring.  No catches and no experience necessary.

The expedition and the competition are backed by Polly Murray, Arctic and Antarctic explorer, and the first Scottish woman to summit Mount Everest.

The Prize

The first placed winner will be offered a place on our Extreme Arctic 2011 expedition to Svalbard, worth almost £6,000.

The second placed winner will be offered a bursary of £2,500 towards the cost of the same expedition.

What’s it all about?

Svalbard, a far-flung snowy archipelago on the edge of the Arctic Ocean, is just 600 miles from the North Pole.  At 78 degrees north, the average temperature on arrival in April is -20C, with the islands already experiencing 24 hour daylight.

Living in tents and snow caves in sub-zero temperatures, you will be taught how to survive in the extreme cold before venturing further afield as weather improves, allowing access to unspoiled landscapes as far as the eye can see.  Mountaineering, cross-country skiing and travelling with pulks across mountain tops, valleys and tundra, you will experience and explore the vast expanse of astounding natural beauty.

You will also be working alongside highly qualified scientists to conduct glacial geomorphology and phenology studies, contributing to long-term projects concerning the measurement of key indicators of climate change.

Find out how to enter the competiton by visiting the BSES website.
