10 Reasons To Take A Gap Year

Thursday 6th December 2012

With 2013 nearly upon us you may be wondering what the year ahead will bring and you could be considering travelling and taking a gap year.

There have been many articles in the press over the last year looking at gap years and whether or not people should take them. If you are unsure whether travelling is for you, then we have compiled a list of 10 reasons why we feel you should take gap year now and what it will mean to you:

1. You Will Learn About The World

There is no better way to learn about the world than to travel it. By travelling you will educate yourself in the ways of other countries and see the way that different cultures live.

2. You Will Learn About Yourself

When you travel in a small group or on your own you will start to learn about yourself and how you cope if different and unfamiliar situations. It will also give you the opportunity to discover what inspires you and what you like and dislike doing.

3. You Will Have Fun!

On a gap year you will have the opportunity to take part in something adventurous or sports related, work abroad or volunteer. These experiences can be life-changing and shape the way you feel and see your future.

4. You Will Learn How To Overcome Challenges

For many gap year travellers this will be the first time that you have really been away from home and it will give you the opportunity to learn about getting along in the real world. It is a great experience that will help you mature.

5. You Will Learn How To Budget

When you take a gap year you will not have a finite source of income so you will learn how to budget and manage your finances. You may have to find a gap year job when travelling or look for volunteer work to cover some of your expenditure and this is all a learning curve regarding saving money.

6. You Will Improve Your Employability

Employers tend to favour applicants who have taken a gap year as they feel that this person has developed all the factors described above rather than an applicant who hasn’t taken a gap year.

7. You Will Make A Great Network Of Friends

Gap year travellers tend to develop and grow their social skills when travelling and will come back with many friends located all over the world. This social skill is a skill that will stay with them for life.

8. You May Find Your Purpose In Life

By this we mean that by travelling you often can get a much better idea of what you want to do with your life be that what you want to study or what career path you want to take.

9. You Could Learn A Foreign Language

There is no better way to learn a foreign language than when travelling abroad and experiencing a language and culture first-hand. A secondary language is such a great transferable skill to possess.

10. You Will Experience Something Memorable

A gap year is an experience that you will never forget. You will see the world, see different cultures, meet new people and experience a time in your life like no other. It will be an experience which will stay with you for the rest of your life.
