City Guide to San Francisco
Why San Francisco?
San Francisco is not only one of the coolest looking cities in the US, with funky old houses clinging to its hills, but it’s also home to all things radical and forward thinking. Its history has been shaped by the movements that have grown here - the Beat Generation in the fifties; hippies, student activists and Black Power groups in the sixties; gay rights movement in the seventies.
Fact about San Francisco
- The Golden Gate Bridge was completed in 1937 after four years and a mere $35 million.
- The 1.2 mile structure is the second longest single-suspension bridge in the world and contains two cables with enough steel wire (80,000 miles) to go around the equator three times.
- Alcatraz is Spanish for 'pelican'.
